Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) issued a letter to Ms. Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to express their concern regarding cancellation of the project on “Human Rights Defenders Training and Advocacy Programme in Bangladesh” relating to promotion of optional protocol to the convention against torture led by the local human rights organisation Odhikar.
AHRC expressed that the government’s commitment to promotion of human rights, particularly to prevent torture. The decision on August 31, 2009 by the NGO Affairs Bureau to cancel the Odhikar project comes as an unpleasant surprise. No reason has been given for the cancellation of the project which had already been approved by the NGO Affairs Bureau on April 28, 2009 which comes under the office of the Prime Minister.
